Korea Maritime & Ocean University Hosts Visit by the President and Delegation from CINEC in Sri Lanka: Expanding Cooperation in Global Marine Education and the Marine Industry

Korea Maritime & Ocean University (President Dong Keun Ryoo) announced that it hosted a delegation led by Capt. Ajith Peiris, President of Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC) in Sri Lanka, at the university’s main campus on May 18, 2026. The visit focused on fostering global maritime professionals and expanding international educational cooperation between the two institutions.

The delegation consisted of five members, including CINEC President Capt. Ajith Peiris, the Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Sciences, and representatives from the global maritime industry. Representing Korea Maritime & Ocean University were President Dong Keun Ryoo and officials from the Office of International Affairs, the Global Maritime Center, and the Industry-Academia-Research ETRS Center.

During the meeting, the two institutions engaged in extensive discussions on several areas of cooperation, including:▲the operation of joint education and training programs to cultivate maritime professionals in Sri Lanka; ▲ the expansion of student exchange and short-term training programs; ▲ educational cooperation linked to the global marine industry; and ▲ strategies for attracting outstanding international students and promoting joint international education programs.

In particular, the two institutions agreed to strengthen practical international education programs and develop a field-oriented education and training cooperation framework aligned with global industry demands in the shipping, port, shipbuilding, and maritime logistics sectors.

They also agreed to expand student exchange programs and promote a global talent exchange network through partnerships among specialized maritime universities in Asia.

Following the meeting, the delegation toured the training and key campus facilities of the Industry-Academia-Research ETRS Center at Korea Maritime & Ocean University and expressed strong interest in Korea’s maritime education system and the university’s state-of-the-art educational infrastructure.

Founded in 1990, CINEC is a leading private higher education institution in Sri Lanka, with approximately 22,000 students currently enrolled. The institution is widely recognized for its specialization in maritime education, particularly in navigation and marine engineering programs. In addition, CINEC operates joint master’s and doctoral programs in collaboration with institutions such as Dalian Maritime University in China and the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.

Since signing an international academic exchange agreement in 2025, Korea Maritime & Ocean University and CINEC have continued to strengthen their collaborative partnership. Following this meeting, the two institutions plan to further expand their global educational cooperation in the marine and maritime industries.

President Dong Keun Ryoo stated, “Korea Maritime & Ocean University has continuously expanded cooperation with leading maritime universities around the world to cultivate professionals who will lead the global maritime industry.” He added, “We expect our exchange with CINEC to provide an opportunity not only to attract outstanding international students and strengthen global cooperation in maritime education, but also to further reinforce the foundation for cultivating international professionals who will lead the future maritime industry.”
